From Kangaroo Nickname to Crowdsourced Design:
Following a competition that garnered over 8,000 entries, Australia's Moon Rover, "Roo-ver" emerged as the winning name, reflecting the nation's bold step into space exploration. Now, the focus shifts to the crucial Regolith Sample Acquisition Device, responsible for collecting lunar soil (regolith) for analysis.
Through a collaboration with ELO2 and Freelancer.com, the "ELO2 Big Dipper Lunar Regolith Acquisition Challenge" empowers innovators to contribute design ideas and recommendations. Australia's Moon Rover competition Phase 1 saw multiple winning entries for the rover's arm mechanism, with each concept rigorously tested for feasibility.
Phase 2: Public Participation Takes Center Stage:
The next phase opens the door to all Australian residents and citizens, regardless of their involvement in Phase 1.
Participants are invited to submit one-page infographics with design suggestions for the regolith acquisition device, taking into account the lunar environment, regolith properties, and operational constraints.
Submissions are due by March 8th, with winners announced on April 1st and sharing a prize pool of $3,000.
Roo-ver's Lunar Mission:
This 44-pound Australia's Moon Rover is slated to land near the lunar south pole in 2026 as part of NASA's Artemis program.
Its 14-Earth-day mission (half a lunar day) will involve scooping lunar regolith, which NASA aims to use for oxygen extraction – a crucial step towards establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon and fueling future Mars missions.
