Indian Navy Ships to get Japanese UNICORN Technology!

India and Japan have taken a major step in defense cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Cooperation during the 7th India-Japan Joint Working Group on Defense Equipment and Technology Cooperation.

This collaboration involves the Indian Ministry of Defense's Defense Research and Development Organization (DDP) and Japan's Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) and focuses on military technology.

The Indian Navy, in partnership with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), has initiated a two-phase project to develop an Indigenous Integrated Mast (IIM). In the first phase, the IIM will integrate various antennas on a single mast without a Radome, enhancing communication capabilities. The second phase will see enhanced integration with a Radome, providing resilience in tough marine environments.

Notably, the signing of the MoU with Japan indicates a shift towards collaboration rather than complete technology import. The transfer of the UNICORN (UNIted COnbined Radio aNtenna) system is a key aspect of this cooperation. The advanced technology consolidates multiple antennas into a single structure, reducing the radar cross-section of vessels and bolstering their stealth capabilities.

The Memorandum of Cooperation represents a significant milestone in bilateral defense collaboration and opens doors for the transfer of cutting-edge military technologies, strengthening the defense capabilities of both nations. India's development of an Indigenous Integrated Mast underscores its commitment to achieving self-reliance in defense technology.

As the cooperation progresses, it is expected to foster closer ties between India and Japan, facilitating future joint ventures and knowledge-sharing initiatives. This agreement holds great implications for the defense industries of both countries and paves the way for further advancements in military technology.
