Indian Air Force has a new low-cost cruise missile on their radar!

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is delving into the development of a novel low-cost cruise missile (LCCM) characterized by a projected range of 100-150 kilometres. This strategic move by the IAF has been spurred by a comprehensive study of the Russian-Ukraine war dynamics, where the Russian Air Force extensively utilized precision-guided munitions (PGMs) and subsonic cruise missiles. The envisaged LCCM aims to offer a cost-effective mechanism for engaging low-priority targets, showcasing the Indian military's commitment to enhancing its tactical capabilities.

At the forefront of this exploration is the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which has already put forth a range of proposals, including the Small Smart Weapon (SAAW). However, there's room for the initiation of an entirely new program to address the specific requirements of the IAF. This underscores India's dedication to innovation and technological advancement in its defense strategies.

The proposed LCCM is not only anticipated to be cost-effective but also precision-guided, aligning with contemporary warfare principles that emphasize accuracy in target engagement. Moreover, its designed versatility is a notable feature. The missile is envisioned to be launchable from various platforms, including fighter jets, Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) and High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Class Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and attack helicopters. This adaptability reflects a holistic approach, ensuring that the missile can be deployed across a spectrum of scenarios and operational environments.

Crucially, the LCCM's intended ability to penetrate enemy air defenses positions it as a potent asset in future conflicts. Modern warfare scenarios demand not only precision but also the capability to navigate sophisticated defense mechanisms. By focusing on an LCCM with these attributes, the IAF is proactively addressing the evolving nature of aerial warfare, where standoff distances and accuracy play pivotal roles.
