As the utilization of drones continues to rise for surveillance, logistics support, and potential security threats, India has made significant strides in developing its own counter-technology. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully created an indigenous counter-drone system capable of detection and counter-attacks, including "soft kill" and "hard kill" measures against various types of drones.
Counter-Drone System Readiness: According to a recent report presented by a parliamentary standing committee, the DRDO's counter-drone technology is now ready for production. The system has been showcased to armed services and internal security agencies, marking a crucial advancement in India's defense capabilities. The technology transfer has been entrusted to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in Bengaluru, serving as the production agency. Additionally, Transfer of Technology agreements have been extended to four more Indian firms to enhance the production of anti-drone systems.
Focus on Anti-Drone Technology: Recognizing the increasing significance of anti-drone technology, a representative from DRDO emphasized the organization's close collaboration with the industry. The DRDO is actively engaged in Research and Development (R&D) efforts to fortify anti-drone protection against evolving drone technologies. This strategic approach aligns with the organization's commitment to staying at the forefront of defense capabilities.
Addressing Diverse Drone Requirements: In response to the surging demand for different types of drones, including micro-drones, the DRDO is diligently working on various projects. The Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) unmanned aerial vehicle TAPAS, designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Target Acquisition (ISTAR) applications, is progressing through advanced developmental trials. Simultaneously, the development of the Short Range Armed UAV Archer, designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and low-intensity conflict, is underway with developmental flight trials in progress.
Project Delays and Corrective Measures: While making significant advancements, the parliamentary committee report also sheds light on project delays within the DRDO. Out of 55 projects, 23 were not completed within the stipulated time frame. In response, the DRDO secretary informed the committee about the initiation of corrective measures. The organization is in the process of hiring a consultant to identify major reasons for project delays, with the intent of implementing corrective actions based on the findings.
With the successful development of an indigenous counter-drone system and ongoing efforts in diverse drone-related projects, the DRDO continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing India's defense capabilities. The collaborative approach with industry partners and the proactive stance on addressing project delays signal a strategic and adaptive approach in ensuring the nation's security.
